Local SEO for Lagos Businesses: How to Rank When Customers Search Near You

When someone in Lagos searches for your type of business, are you showing up? Local SEO is the most underused growth tool for Nigerian SMEs — and it is mostly free to do.

A restaurant in Lekki. A law firm in Victoria Island. A pharmacy in Surulere. All three have customers searching for them on Google every day — using phrases like "restaurant near me", "lawyer in VI", "pharmacy open now Surulere". If those businesses have not invested in local SEO, they are invisible for the most valuable searches of all: people ready to buy, right now, nearby.

What Local SEO Actually Means

Local SEO is the practice of optimising your digital presence so your business appears when people search for your services in a specific location. Unlike general SEO, which targets broad keyword rankings, local SEO targets searches with geographic intent — and it includes both Google Search results and Google Maps.

For most Nigerian businesses serving a local market, local SEO delivers a faster and higher return than any other digital marketing channel.

Step 1: Claim and Optimise Your Google Business Profile

This is the most important thing you can do, and it is free. Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the map results when someone searches for your business type in your area. Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, and fill in every field:

  • Business name, category, and description
  • Address, phone number, and website
  • Opening hours (including public holidays)
  • Photos — interior, exterior, team, products
  • Services list with descriptions and prices

Businesses with complete profiles receive significantly more clicks than those with partial information.

Step 2: Get Reviews — Consistently

Google ranks businesses with more recent, higher-rated reviews above those with fewer. Ask every satisfied customer to leave a Google review. Make it easy — send them a direct link. Five genuine reviews can move you above competitors who have been in business longer but never asked for reviews.

Respond to every review, positive or negative. Google sees active review management as a trust signal.

Step 3: Use Location Keywords on Your Website

Your website pages should naturally include the locations you serve. Not as keyword stuffing, but as natural context. "We provide IT support to businesses in Lekki, VI, and Ikoyi" is more valuable than "We provide IT support in Nigeria" — because people search for specific areas.

If you serve multiple areas, consider creating individual pages for each location you target heavily.

Step 4: Consistent NAP Across the Web

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. These must be identical everywhere your business appears online — your website, Google Business Profile, social media pages, online directories. Inconsistencies confuse Google and reduce your local ranking trust signals.

Step 5: Local Backlinks

Getting links from other Nigerian websites — local news sites, business associations, partner companies, industry directories — tells Google that you are a real, established business in your location. Even a few quality local backlinks can meaningfully improve your local rankings.

How Long Does Local SEO Take?

Most businesses see meaningful movement within 60 to 90 days of consistent optimisation. Google Business Profile improvements often show results faster — sometimes within two to four weeks of claiming and completing your listing.
